This piece contains an extract of The Dhāraṇī “Vanquishing Constraints of Body, Speech and Mind” is a Buddhist protective and purifying prayer concerned with overcoming the obstacles that bind our physical actions, speech, and mind. These three body, speech, and mind represent the entirety of how we experience and engage with the world. Through the recitation and contemplation of the dhāraṇī, harmful influences, obscurations, and conditions that restrict these three aspects of being are pacified. Its deeper meaning points beyond protection alone: by freeing body, speech, and mind from their habitual constraints, the practitioner creates the conditions for clarity, wholesome action, and the unfolding of awakened awareness.

I’ve used a sheet of exquisite Khadi Rag Paper made in Karnataka, South India from 100% cotton rag. The rags are pulped in a Hollander beater. Neutral pH internal size is added at this stage. Khadi rag papers are the only handmade papers in India made with neutral pH size and are the only ones that are genuinely acid free.

“Think not you can direct the course of love, for love, if it finds you worthy, directs your course.” – Khalil Gibran

This quote is from Khalil Gibran’s book The Prophet. That book made a really big impression on me and it remains one of my all-time faves to this day. This quote really stood out to me for its layered meanings.

I mostly focus on Buddhist texts and passages in my calligraphy pieces. But some quotes are so poignant and profound that you’ll see them make their way to my collection. This is one.

This is piece features a portion of the Heart Sutra.

The Heart Sutra is one of the most profound and concise scriptures in Tibetan Buddhism, encapsulating the essence of *Prajñāpāramitā* (Perfection of Wisdom). It teaches the doctrine of *Śūnyatā* (emptiness), emphasizing that all phenomena lack inherent existence. Central to the sutra is the phrase, “Form is emptiness, emptiness is form,” illustrating the inseparability of appearance and emptiness. In Tibetan Buddhism, the *Heart Sutra* is recited for purification, insight, and overcoming delusion. It is a key text for developing wisdom and realizing the true nature of reality.

At 62″, this is the longest piece I’ve made so far. I really enjoyed coming back to it day after day, chipping away at the task. Stress levels rise as you make more and more progress and you realize that one mistake means starting over from scratch. It all comes together to create a really meaningful experience. I’m already working on my next largest piece 🙂

This piece features an extract of the profound terma known as “Buddhahood Without Meditation: Advice for Making One’s Own True Face Evident as the Great Perfection That is the Inherent Nature”. It’s most commonly known among Tibetans as Nang-Jang, which might be rendered: “Refining Apparent Phenomena”. The work was revealed by the Terton Dudjom Lingpa (1835-1904).

Dudjom Lingpa’s account in the Nang Jang is in the form of a journal describing a number of visions and dreams that he experienced throughout his life. Indeed much of the text consists of Dudjom Lingpa quoting the deities and masters he encountered on these occasions. The knowledge he gained during his experiences spans the range of teachings on the “View” of the Great Perfection approach of the Nyingma school. It is a direct transmission so powerful that just hearing it read aloud ensures that the listener will escape the suffering of cyclic existence.

Chagdud Tulku offered the following words in the introduction to the book “Buddhahood Without Meditation”, which I wish to echo.

“Dharmakaya, the entire vast array of atemporal and pristine purity;
sambhogakaya, the entire vast array of an unceasing display of peaceful and wrathful deities;
nirmanakaya, the entire vast array that tames any being in any way necessary:
I bow with devotion to Dudjom Lingpa, tamer of beings.”

This is probably my favorite quote by Chogyam Trungpa, among so many good ones. Trungpa’s words point to the deepest source of our fear: the desperate search for something permanent to hold onto. We spend our lives reaching for certainty, identity, beliefs, and security, yet reality offers no fixed ground. At first this feels terrifying, like falling endlessly through empty space. But the liberating insight is that there is no impact awaiting us. When we stop resisting the fall, we discover that openness itself is our true nature. Freedom is found not by securing a foothold, but by relaxing into the boundless, groundless expanse of experience.
