The Art of Tibetan Calligraphy

I have been practicing Tibetan calligraphy for more than 25 years. What began as a fascination with the beauty of the Tibetan written language gradually became a deeply meaningful part of my life and spiritual practice.

Each piece I create is written by hand, using a calligraphy pen and fine traditional papers chosen for the way they receive the ink and complement the character of the Tibetan script. I value the subtle variations that come from working by hand—the movement of the pen, the texture of the paper, and the small imperfections that give each piece its individual character.

For me, Tibetan calligraphy is about much more than beautiful writing. My aim is to create work that transmits inspiration while also expressing something of the profound essence of Tibetan Buddhism. The words themselves carry meaning, but so too can the care, attention and intention with which they are written. I hope each finished piece offers a quiet opportunity for contemplation and connection with the wisdom it contains.

Throughout Sambhota Studio, you will find original calligraphy featuring Buddhist mantras, passages from sutras, Dharma teachings and quotations, alongside words from thinkers, philosophers and other voices whose insights resonate with the contemplative spirit of the work.

I also hope this site can serve as a place to explore the wider tradition of Tibetan calligraphy its many writing styles, the handmade papers and materials traditionally used to create it, and the remarkable manuscript culture through which Tibetan Buddhist teachings have been preserved for centuries.
